LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Understand chromosomes and their function.
  2. Learn that Chromosomes are found in the cell nucleus.
  3. Chromosomes are usually found in pairs in body cells.
  4. Know that Chromosomes are made of DNA and carry genes. Genes (DNA) make up the code for all the different characteristics of an organism.

1. What is DNA?

Most of us have heard of DNA from TV and crime dramas as DNA profiles can be used by forensic scientists to help them solve crimes. In science, deoxyribonucleic acid is what is known as DNA. Essentially, it is a chemical compound composed of two long molecules arranged in a spiral shape. These molecules are called the double helix, or the double strand. DNA is the molecule that contains genetic information. This consists of all the instructions that a living organism requires for it to grow, reproduce and function.

2. What is the nucleus of a cell?

In your body, the vast majority of your cells have a structure called a nucleus. The nucleus is one of the most important parts of a cell. It's where your genetic code is held, and dictates the way your cell will function. The nucleus contains your genetic material. It contains the instructions on what you or any organism needs to grow and develop. This "genetic material" is stored in chromosomes.

Nucleus and Chromosomes

As you can see from the above diagram, the cell nucleus contains chromosomes.
